Drainage problems with a washing machine fall into one of two categories: either the water will not drain out of the washing machine, or the water will leave the machine, but it cannot flow properly through the drain pipes. Several different specific problems can cause these general problems, and diagnosing them can be a complicated matter. Many times a clogged drain hose is the reason why your washer is not draining properly. Remove the hose and visually inspect it for obstructions. A garden hose can be used to remove any stubborn obstruction of the hose.

Then run a rinse / spin cycle. If it still does not drain, continue with the next step.

If you suspect your drain pump is clogged, you should drain the tub and then disconnect and inspect the hoses for foreign objects. Don’t forget to check the pump inlets. You may need to remove the pump from the washer in order to see it well.
If you have problems with your pump, there is a possibility that it has been locked. The engine will continue to run and try to start the pump. If the pump runs on a belt, the belt will burn or break, there is even a possibility that the pulley will break. Things can go from bad to worse if the engine continues to run with tension in the belt, which can cause the engine to seize.
Another possible problem could be that the bearings have clung to the pump or got stuck with a pen, coin or sock. It is also possible that the impeller blades have broken. In most cases, a new pump will solve the problem.

Drive Belt Problems

The pump is operated by a drive belt that fits around the pulleys at the bottom of the washer motor. If this belt is broken or not tight on the pulleys, the washer will have difficulty draining or may not drain at all. Fixing this will require you to turn the machine sideways to examine the belt. Homeowners can do it themselves, although many choose to have a repair person take care of a repair of this level.

Plumbing System Problems

If the water successfully leaves the machine but then spills out of the drain support tube or goes back into the bathtub, then the problem is probably a traditional drain obstruction. Because small cloth fibers are regularly washed through the system, it is common for drainage obstructions in the plumbing pipes in which the washer drains. A clogged drain causes water to return to the vertical pipe and spill on the floor. Cleaning the clogged drain will usually solve the problem.

What causes a washing machine not spinning?

Some top-loading washers use a direct drive motor coupling to transfer power from the engine to the transmission. The transmission coupling connects the engine to the transmission and consists of two plastic transmission forks with a rubber coupling between them. One of the drive forks is attached to the drive motor shaft and another one is attached to the transmission input shaft. As the motor shaft rotates, the rubber coupling between the transmission forks absorbs torque to prevent the forks from breaking. Normal use will create wear on the coupling and, finally, the transmission forks may slip and not engage the transmission and clutch. A common symptom of a faulty motor coupling is that the washer fills and drains normally but does not stir or spin.

1. Is the load unbalanced?
If you have washed a lot of heavy bath towels, a weight imbalance can affect the sensors. Try to wash a combination of large and small items so that everything works.
2. Are the outlet pipes blocked?

Some top-loading washers use a clutch assembly to block the transmission input shaft to the wash basket drive during the spin cycle. Over time, repeated friction of the clutch pads that rub against the housing can cause clutch wear and create a scraping sound. A worn-out clutch can prevent your washer from rotating or may cause a slower spin speed that will leave your clothes wet after one cycle. Additional symptoms that the clutch may be causing its problems are brake dust or chips that are under the washer, a slight burning smell or a loud noise during the spin cycle.

Spin belt:

The spin belt is used to connect the transmission engine to the transmission in some top-loading washers, or the transmission engine to the washing basket in most front-loading washers. If your washer does not spin, you should inspect the spin belt for signs of overheating or excessive wear. Before replacing a damaged belt, you should verify that any belt tensioning device, such as a crazy pulley or motor slip, is functioning properly and moves freely. In top-loading washers, you should also verify that the drive pulley rotates freely in the directions of rotation and agitation and that there is nothing that prevents the movement of the agitator or the wash basket that can cause the belt to slide over the pulleys You should also check for signs of oil or water leaks in the belt or pulley area. In front-loading washers, make sure the bathtub rotates easily by hand.
